Projects in this area aim to adapt to these changed needs. The targeted promotion of the local economy, of business start-ups and new settlements of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for structural maintenance, structural strengthening and in particular economic revitalization of the cities is the goal. This is also intended to counteract loss of functionality and vacancies. But the loyalty of entrepreneurs to a certain area is also of great importance. The local economy can make an identity-building contribution, promote local cohesion, and contribute to positive local development through networking.
Within the framework of the Social Cohesion Community Initiative (formerly: Socially Integrative City), the “Local Economy” strategy is one of the central areas of responsibility.

Within the framework of the Social Cohesion Community Initiative (formerly: Socially Integrative City), the “Local Economy” strategy is one of the central areas of responsibility. Against this background, the various areas of action in the linking area of local business promotion and urban development are bundled technically and methodically to form integrated approaches to business-oriented district marketing:
- Economically oriented district marketing Stralauer Kiez/Berlin-Friedrichshain
- Commercial street management Frankfurter Allee/Berlin-Friedrichshain
The practical implementation at the district level was and is supplemented by conceptual studies:
- Research and analysis of the potential of a network Lichtenberger business streets / Berlin-Lichtenberg
- Local economy in the Berlin quarter management areas within the framework of the social city, further development, and new approaches
